What determines your healthy life?

By live healthy · Thursday, December 18th, 2008
Many people are wondering what the prime factor is for a long and healthy life.
What has the greater impact – genetics or healthy living?

We believe it’s both. To start on the first: if your genes let you live to x years, you can potentially make it to x years. But, if you don’t live healthily, then you might not live that long. Also, you can’t (theoretically) exceed x years because your genes will limit you.
That being said, living healthy by exercising regularly, taking in lots of vital nutrition (like Omega 3, fibre, minerals, vitamins) will beyond doubt help you to make it longer than if you wouldn´t do all these things or instead would drink, smoke and live on quick food.
Allthough, all these things will make sure your physical body stays fit, you shouldn´t forget to take care of your mental body as well. People that deal with “living healthy, dieting, exercising” etc. often forget this issue. To some it might look minor or unimportant but I can say from my own encounter, it is everything but minor. Of what excellent to you is it to eat lots of fruits but being depressive? How would vitamins and minerals help you when you feel constantly stressed from colleagues and your job? Of what use can exercises be if you can´t overcome your inner temptation and laziness to do them?

Thanks for that excellent post! I reckon it´s genetics, but mostly how you live your life.

You beyond doubt place really excellent thoughts into this. I´d like to add this: Back when Reagan was president his surgeon general was C. Everett Koop, Dr. Koop used to travel the country demonizing smoking and to a lesser extent drinking, one day he was on Letterman’s show and was taking questions from the audience a person questioned the doctor to clarify why nearly everybody has a tale about an ancient family member that lived a very long life and was never seen without a drink in one hand and a smoke in the other the doctor quickly answered “excellent genes” so I’ll go with the doc. and say genetics.

Yep, I also reckon you shouldn´t leave out the mind from all of this. It´s been mentioned hundreds of years ago: ‘Mens agitat molem!’ (the spirit moves matter)

A lucky combination of all three is what makes some people live longer than others.
